Choosing a gas boiler
Help with your options?
including what controls to use, and what type of boiler to install.
There are a few different sorts of gas boiler that come with different specifications, outputs and of course prices.
- Combination or Combi Boiler
- Regular – Heat Only
Combination or Combi Boiler
Combi Gas Boilers supply heating and hot water directly from the boiler into your Central Heating System and produce hot water on demand by heating water straight from the mains. They are better suited to homes that have a decent mains pressure and families with an average to low demand for hot water.
One attraction of a Combi is that it can save on space as you don’t need the a hot water cylinder, or a feed tank in the loft. This space-saving advantage is one reason why Combi Gas Boilers are the leading choice for our customers.
- Produces hot water as and when you need it
- No need for a hot water cylinder or external controls
- Suits properties with decent mains pressure
- Suits families with an average to low demand for hot water
Regular Heat Only Boiler
Unlike a Combi Boiler a Regular Heat Only Boiler provides you with hot water by heating the water stored in a hot water cylinder (typically located in your airing cupboard or loft space) via the means of a heating coil. You can then use the hot water in this tank as required.
Regular or Heat Only boilers do what they say on the tin, they provide heat nothing else, all other controls, like zone valves, pumps, an expansion vessel if using a sealed system must be fitted externally from the boiler.
The use of a Regular Heat Only Boiler together with a hot water cylinder is the traditional approach to hot water provision in UK homes. It can still be a good choice and can suit families with a higher demand for hot water and properties with a lower mains pressure.
Why chose a regular heat only gas boiler
- Larger space requirement than Combi and System Boilers
- Suits families with a higher demand for hot water; more than 2 bathrooms
- Suits properties with lower mains pressure
- You want to replace an old boiler to improve an existing conventional central heating system
System Gas Boiler
A System Boiler is very much like a regular heat only boiler except the pump, and expansion vessel and even the diverter valve are installed inside the boiler, hence the name as the complete system is inside the boiler. And are another option for families who are thinking of a traditional hot water system and Regular Boiler. Advantages include the fact that with a System Boiler a feed tank expansion tank for heating are not required.
Why chose a system gas boiler
- Less space requirement than Regular Boilers;
- Suits families with a higher demand for hot water more than 2 bathrooms
Many of the major individual components of the heating and hot water system are built into a system boiler, which means that installation is quicker, neater, easier and more efficient
The hot water is pumped from the system boiler through the heating system to the radiators and hot water cylinder, resulting in a fast response and more economical running costs
Condensing Gas Boiler
This is a highly energy-efficient boiler, which captures heat from the flu and re-uses it, which is excellent news for your fuel bills.
It is a requirement that all new gas boilers installed are condensing boilers.
